Choosing Models

When ultimately deciding who would work as a suitable model for each image, careful consideration was taken in order to confidently produce the best overall outcomes. By analysing the concepts of each individual image for the major project, the makeup artist is then able to think vastly on how they want the images to look and what the artist intends to convey with each image. From the get go, it has always been clear that the makeup artist intends to showcase their individual style which is very high fashion and editorial looks. Moreover, the artist also is aiming to create four final images that can be used in a professional portfolio that will hopefully aid in gaining work in industry once leaving BA. And so because of this, it is important to take time deciding on models for the major project in order to achieve these objectives.

Image 1 “What the Fox!” The “What the Fox!” image will most likely take the longest to construct due to the amount of prosthetic work that will be required. Prosthetic work takes time and a lot of trail and errors especially considering that this is an area that the makeup artist does not consider a personal strength. These are massive factors to consider when choosing a model, as this image will require a cast of the model’s face, sculpting and the running of multiple prosthetic pieces, and also trailing with the pieces and application on the model as the makeup artist works through the process. Due to this, the decision of using a model that is in the artist’s class would work the best to be able to achieve the best outcome possible, as it enables the ability to face cast and trail pieces much easier than an it would be on an external model. Darcey Kenworthy stood out as an obvious choice for this image due to her natural ability to pose in front of a camera without much direction. Having a close bond with her will help in the process as we both have confidence in each other and good communication skills that will be important when conducting a face cast. For some, face casting can make you feel vulnerable and claustrophobic so having a good bond with this will make the task much easier.

Image 2 “Plastic isn’t Fantastic” This image, along with one other, will be a very strong fashion focused editorial look so a model that is confident in front of a camera is crucial to producing an image that is professional. The makeup artist wants to try different compositions within this image full body, and close up shots. Because of this, the decision was made to look outside of the classroom to find someone who fits this brief. An ex student of York College who used to study fashion came into mind and also put her name forward when reached out to on social media platforms for a model. Emma Skelton fits the intended idea being blonde, her hair will work well with the intended plastic wrap headpiece, clothing, and accessories. As well as this, her background in fashion may also help aid this shoot as she has past experience modelling for her course and is knowledgeable in the fashion industry.

Image 3 “Greed is a Nasty Business” This is the second image that is heavily fashion based, and again requires a model that is able to compose themselves in front of a camera lense. Millie Johnson will model for this image as the makeup artist feels as though she will work best with the colour theme of green and gold having brunette hair and olive skin. Because the makeup artist wishes to shoot this image full body rather than close ups, Millie is tall and carries herself well providing a very traditional editorial look. This look will have great emphasis on a headdress and accessories made out of dollar bills and so therefore a model that is comfortable wearing these things was a must. Millie also has previous modelling experience working with other ex students from the York College fashion department, making her familiar to the building and to what is expected. The makeup artist shares a close bond with this model allowing her to feel comfortable with the artist whilst they work.

Image 4 “Fashion’s Future” For this look, the makeup artist wants to create a powerful look on what fashion will look like if it doesn’t become more sustainable. This look aims to tie in futuristic concepts within fashion whilst also creating a shock factor image to view demonstrating a messy apocalyptic theme. Jack Angus will be used as a model due to his ability to pose and comfortably in front of a camera. Jack’s overall persona is very edgy and alternative, which the makeup artist feels, will add to the final look.
