Sculpting the Fox Snout

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

One image will heavily rely on a prosthetic foxes snout to achieve a fox/human hybrid. Creating a prosthetic snout will allow the makeup artist to showcase another industry technique within their portfolio and will guarantee uniqueness between all four images. Prosthetics is a challenging skillset within the makeup industry. The makeup artist sees this particular skillset as an area of improvement having struggled with it last year. The option to progress and develop within this particular skill set was taken.

The makeup artist wants to achieve a sultry look that sticks to a high fashion theme. Lavish clothing will be represented in the image, along with pieces of fine jewellery such as pearls and ornate earrings. The models hair will be waved to further add to a glamorous look. A bag made of silicone human skin will also be constructed to further raise the ethical issues involving use of animal skin within the fashion industry. The image should essentially show the roles reversed of an animal using human skin for fashion to create an impactful image. The main prosthetic piece will be the fox snout. The makeup artist aims to flock and hair punch the final prosthetic piece to add texture and dimension to the look.

Woodcock, N. (2021) Initial sculpt

The initial stages of the sculpt were challenging. Images of the stages of development were taken in order to show progression and for future comparison. This allowed the makeup artist to see areas of improvement. The main initial issues the makeup artist saw concern was the shape and scale of the fox’s nose. The area towards the top of the snout was too thin in proportion to the rest of the snout. The makeup artist did struggle with these factors having struggled with prosthetic work in the past. Multiple trail and errors occurred in order to try correcting these issues.

Having struggled for a couple of weeks, not being able to get the shape and proportions correct, the makeup artist felt as though starting again would be the most beneficial in order to achieve a more successful design. Using reference images of a fox helped the makeup artist create a much more proportionate snout. The artist realised how imperative it is to consider both anatomies of the fox and human. (Boddy-Evans, M. 2019) suggests that by using arefference images allows you to learn about the characteristics of a subject. By doing so, this allows the prosthetic piece to work in unison with the models face in order to achieve the most realistic and proportionate outcome. Checking the sculpt from all angles also helped aid in correctly scaling the piece to the models face. Having applied this, the snout became much more realistic and animal like overall achieving a much more successful shape.
